Celebrating the Musical and Cultural Expressions of the World's Indigenous and Folk Flute Traditions
Flute Circles, Clubs, and Groups
Every flute player travels a similar path—being inspired with an eagerness to learn how to play, to improve upon playing ability, and/or to engage in fellowships with like-minded individuals. Musical companionship and partnership is an integral part of the flute journey, whether professional, amateur, or enthusiast.
Flute circles are in existence worldwide, and they fulfill the needs of flute players on many different levels. Although each circle is unique in the manner in which it is organized, there are a few characteristics that
most have in common. A flute circle provides a venue in which people who are interested in any type of
flute can gather and share talents, perspectives, knowledge, and experiences. It is a gathering in which
people can help one another musically, spiritually, culturally, and educationally. Meeting schedules and
areas of focus for flute circles vary.
Flute Circle gatherings provide a sense of connection that results in everyone growing musically, from the beginner to the recording artist. People often feel a spiritual, emotional, and cultural bond created by the music of the flute. A sense of camaraderie often develops at a flute circle - a type of flute family dynamic manifests. Often times, one learns more through the people-connection than through reading books or listening to tapes and CDs. Ultimately, the greatest teacher is still the flute itself, but when one is in a rut or when one’s playing is stuck on a plateau, nothing gives an individual a more significant boost than to spend time with other flute players.
Below is a list of flute circles worldwide. Each circle is listed with its primary flute-type focus, although
many flute circles welcome all world flutes at their meetings. The desire to learn is substantial and
expansive in most flute circles.
If you are interested in joining one of these circles, this can be achieved by contacting them directly for
more information. For those organizations who do not have addresses listed on this site, please contact the World Flute Society via the following e-mail address: worldflutes@AOL.COM We will be pleased to put you in touch with the appropriate individuals.
